Press ReleasesBusy week for combat sports in Bangkok
It has been a very busy week for combat sports in Bangkok with a number of events and announcements in the Thai capital helping to promote the popularity of not only the Thai martial art of muaythai but also MMA.
The International Federation of Muaythai Amateur (IFMA) has been holding its annual world championships at the National Stadium in central Bangkok with fighters from around the world competing for the title of world amateur champion in 8 different weight divisions.
Behind the scenes, there have also been developments in the plan for muaythai and jiu jitsu to collaborate for their mutual benefit. Speaking at the AIMS General Assembly in Bangkok on August 13, the organization’s new President Stefan Fox announced that AIMS had agreed to sanction a series of events incorporating both muaythai and jiu jitsu.
Elite Boxing has now secured the exclusive rights to organize a mixed combat sport event series under the title of Elite Fight Night (EFN) Champions League. The format of the EFN Champions League is to combine a 4-man muaythai tournament with 2 MMA superfights. EB’s new partner Abu Dhabi Warriors (ADW) will be sponsoring the MMA fights. The series will be launched at a grand opening event this Saturday at Asiatique in Bangkok.
EB took the opportunity to announce the upcoming EFN Champions League Series and introduce the fight card at the IFMA Sports Awards, which were also held in Bangkok at the Ambassador Hotel on August 19. In addition to presenting various sports awards, the evening honored the legends of muaythai who are no longer with us, while respect was also paid to the victims of the Erawan Shrine bomb, which took place just 2 days earlier.
Organized by IFMA in conjunction with the Brazilian Embassy in Bangkok, the event also featured a performance by a Malaysian singeras well as a number of Brazil-themed shows aimed at promoting Brazilian culture, including a samba dance performance and an official presentation of the upcoming Olympic Games to be held in Brazil in 2016.
