AboutKing's Cup Series
The King's Cup is the single most important event in the international muaythai calendar. Held in Bangkok in
honour of His Majesty the King of Thailand's birthday on December 5 each year, the open-air tournament draws
crowds of up to 300,000 and is televised live. The 8-man tournament features fighters representing Thailand and
seven other countries.
Since 1999, qualification events have been held for the King's Cup. Initially branded as S1, the first attempt was
poorly organised and quickly lost credibility. It was later revived under the King's Cup Series brand in 2009 and
2010. However, disputes between the license holders, Black Hawk, and local promoters led to irreconcilable
problems and the license was not renewed in 2011.
In late 2011, Elite Boxing acquired the license for the King's Cup Series. This situation presented EB with three
business opportunities: re-sell the rights to a 3rd party, organise the qualification events independently, or work
with local co-promoters to organise the events.
